The Krakow Zoological Garden was initially located at Wawel, there were min. lions, monkeys, leopards, camels and rodents.
After King Sigismund II transferred the capital from Kraków to Warsaw, the zoo collapsed. In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, zoos were created in various parts of the city, including Krakowski Park. Thanks to the activists of the Krakow Branch of the Nature Society, the zoo was placed in the Wolski Forest on the Pustelnik hill, in the vicinity of the Camaldolese monastery in Bielany.
The garden was officially opened on July 6, 1929, chaired by the then President of the Republic of Poland, Ignacy Mościcki. On the opening day, the zoo was inhabited by 94 mammals, 98 birds and 12 reptiles. Currently, there are 1,500 animals from over 250 species. The Krakow zoo is constantly developing and is visited by hundreds of thousands of tourists every year.
